The Lifeboat Station Project visit

Photo Steve Burton

Today the Station was visited by Jack Lowe and The Lifeboat Station Project, so we took the opportunity to take a group photograph (above) of our volunteer crew and operational staff.

Jack is visiting all 238 RNLI Lifeboat Stations documenting each station using his 1905 tripod camera. He develops the photos onto glass plates using a process called Ambrotype which was introduced in the early 1850´s. This work is done on site in his mobile darkroom which is a decommissioned NHS ambulance. This means that the lifeboat crews have the delights of seeing the photos come to life there before their eyes.

The photo on the left, is one of the photos which Jack took during his visit of the Ramsgate Lifeboat Coxswain Ian Cannon.

Jack started his five year project in 2015 and you can follow his progress on his web site at

Ramsgate enjoys a successful Sea Safety Day

Local PCSO John Litchfield organised a very successful Sea Safety Day which took place yesterday in glorious sunshine along the lower prominade behind Ramsgate's Main Sands.

The successful event was well attended by the public and provided an opportunity for the representatives of the many national and local organisations that have an interest in beach and sea safety to chat to the public, offer advice and show off some of their equipment.

Representatives of both the RNLI's Lifeboats and Lifeguards were in attendance and the opportunity for many children to dress up in mini lifeboat crew or lifeguard clothing and sit aboard the lifeguard's personal water craft for a photo was a definite 'hit'. A highlight of the event for many people was the arrival off the Sands at 11.30am of Ramsgate RNLI's two lifeboats, the Trent class all weather lifeboat Esme Anderson and the Atlantic 85 inshore lifeboat Claire and David Delves, which carried out a much appreciated demonstration.

Ramsgate RNLI's thanks go to John Litchfield for all of his hard work in organising such a successful day.

Mayday walkers raise money at Ramsgate

When members of the Royal Temple Yacht Club's monthly walking group saw the RNLI's corporate Mayday publicity asking them to 'do your bit' to 'fund our kit' they agreed to raise funds at their May walk.

After gathering at the yacht club in Ramsgate yesterday, and before setting off on their coastal walk, the walkers collected a total of £86.58. This was presented by the club's Commodore Andrew Beaumont-Hope to Ramsgate's volunteer lifeboat press officer John Ray who thanked the members of the Royal Temple Yacht Club for their continued, on-going, support.

Successful Mayday event at Ramsgate

Ramsgate lifeboat's fundraisers held a very successful fund raising and safety information event last Saturday in support of the RNLI's Mayday 'yellow welly' appeal.

The event was held at the local Sainsbury's Westwood store where the staff have chosen Ramsgate RNLI as their charity of the year. As well as the fundraisers members of the South East RNLI Lifeguard team, Ramsgate lifeboat crew and RNLI Education presenters were in attendance as well as volunteer staff from the RNLI shop selling souvenirs. Stormy Stan also came along, as usual proving to be a great attraction especially to the young customers wanting to say 'hello' and have there picture taken with him. Great support was shown by many of the store's customers who generously donated and purchased 'Yellow Welly' badges.

Our thanks go to the management and staff at the store for facilitating the event, to all those who helped and supported us on the day and especially to fundraiser Jan Pearce for all her hard work in organising the event.

Northbourne Park School visits Ramsgate Lifeboat Station

One of the first school visits of 2017 at Ramsgate’s RNLI lifeboat station took place last Tuesday when pupils from the pre-prep ‘Rabbit’ class from Northbourne Park School visited.

The class who were spending the day learning about the work and some of the history of Ramsgate’s Royal Harbour spent over two hours at the boathouse for their pre-arranged visit. They were shown around the all weather and inshore lifeboats and were told about the work of the RNLI, meeting some of the Ramsgate lifeboat crew. After dressing up in some of the mini Musto crew and RNLI lifeguard kit for photo opportunities one young man on departure described his visit as ‘awesome’.

Such visits can only take place by pre-arrangement and for more information please contact the station’s press or visits officer.

Marks and Spencers support Ramsgate RNLI

For the past year Ramsgate RNLI has been the chosen charity of the local branch of Marks and Spencers which has resulted in a total of £4626.20 being raised.

Yesterday Ramsgate lifeboat station’s representatives Jan Pearce, collections organiser, Ray Noble Lifeboat Operations Manager and Joan Jenkins, fundraiser (pictured extreme left and extreme right respectively) visited the store to thank the management and staff for their support and present them with a plaque and certificate.

The staff at the store, situated in the area’s popular ‘out of town’ shopping centre, Westwood Cross, raised some of the money and facilitated the station’s fundraisers to carry out a bucket collection for two days in each month.

The station's thanks go to all involved and especially Jan Pearce for all of her hard work in organising the collections.

Local archers present cheque to Ramsgate RNLI

Representatives from Ramsgate lifeboat station were recently invited to attend an East Kent archery event to receive a donation of £320.

Members of Canterbury, Folkestone and Thanet Archery Clubs were meeting in the grounds of Saltwood Castle near Hythe on Sunday 9 April and the money donated came from funds raised at their various events. The three clubs involved meet regularly and each year a different club chooses the charity to which to donate. On receiving the cheque Ramsgate RNLI management committee chairman Eric Burton thanked the archery club members for their support.

After receiving the cheque the RNLI visitors spent an interesting hour with the club members learning about long bow archery.

Early morning call to assist ex-lifeboat

Ramsgate RNLI's inshore lifeboat (ILB) launched at 6.10am today to assist an ex-RNLI lifeboat with one person on board having difficulty entering Ramsgate harbour.

Once alongside two of the ILB crew transferred to the ex-RNLI 46ft. 9in. Watson and assisted in getting it into harbour under its own power and helped with mooring.

Both Humber and Walton and Frinton lifeboats have previously assisted this vessel which was the Lytham St. Annes station lifeboat from 1951 - 1978, then named Sarah Townsend Porritt, and after a brief period in the relief fleet sold out of RNLI service, in 1983.
